Continued harassment of GAPWUZ officials
The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions is disturbed by the continued attack on the General Agricultural and Plantation Workers’ Union (GAPWUZ) General Secretary, Gertrude Hambira, and staff members of GAPWUZ.
The ZCTU has since engaged the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights in the light of continued harassment of GAPWUZ officials. Meanwhile, Cde Hambira is safe in South Africa as there are fears for her life. The co-Minister of Home Affairs, Giles Mutsekwa has also been taken on and he has promised to deal with the matter personally. The ZCTU has also raised its concerns with the Minister of Labour and Social Services, Paurina Mpariwa who is also working to try and address the issue.
The harassment has been going on since the launch of a video chronicling events in recent farm invasions. Thousands of farm workers have been displaced to this day. These displaced farm workers remain without proper accommodation and no access to basic necessities.
The ZCTU deplores the behaviour of the security agents and will continue to engage relevant ministries in a bid to resolve the matter. We demand that the government immediately stops the harassment of trade unionists. We also demand that the co-Ministers of Home Affairs and the Minister of Labour ensure the safety of GAPWUZ officials and farm workers. We believe there is nothing sinister in the video that was released, as it depicts reality on the ground.
